Lung function testing

About

The multiple breath washout test (MBW) represents a new possibility of lung function diagnosis. It is a noninvasive and very sensitive test reflecting inhomogeneity of lung ventilation and thus giving the insight to the functional status of the most peripheral airways. Several parameters characterizing patient’s breathing pattern and the composition of the exhaled air are measured. From these data basic functional parameters are calculated (FRC, LCI, Scond, Sacin). However it is possible to obtain more information about the functional lung status - e.g., to perform tidal breath analysis and derive new indices characterizing dead space ventilation, regional inhomogeneity etc. Using various mathematical instruments (interval methods) we seek new insight to raw medical data - finding breath ends, behavior of the nitrogen washout process, prediction of incomplete measurement, possibly new clinical indices.
