Excursion

At EuroCG'25, we offer several options for the conference trip on the afternoon of Thursday, April 10th. Each option provides an opportunity to explore the local area around Mělník. Details of the available trips are described below. Note that capacity is limited for each option, so early registration is recommended. Please, register for the conference trip by listing your name under the trip option you wish to attend. Please, ensure that you do not exceed the stated capacity.

The conference trip will depart by bus from Liblice to Mělník at 16:00 on Thursday, and the departure time is strict—please be at the bus already at 15:50. The trip will conclude at 18:30, at which point the buses will take us directly from Mělník to the conference banquet at the Yard resort, which is located in Předboj, a village approximately 17km from Mělník. This departure time is also strict. The bus departs from Fibichova street in Mělník or nearby; see the map below. This is the same location where the bus will drop participants off upon arriving from Liblice to Mělník.

During the conference trip, you can also take a self-guided tour in Mělník. You can explore cozy cafés, traditional pubs, enjoy the stunning view of the confluence of the rivers, take a relaxing walk to the riverbank, or admire the historic town walls.

1) Chateau Mělník

Remarkable Baroque castle of Mělník, the seat of an ancient noble family of princes of Lobkowicz, stands above the confluence of the Elbe and the Vltava rivers, and above a slope covered with vineyards. It is one of the most important sights of the town. From the chateau’s terrace and restaurant you will enjoy magnificent views of the confluence of the Labe and Vltava rivers, the majestic Říp Mountain, the volcanic peaks of the České středohoří (Central Bohemian Uplands) and the St. Ludmila Vineyard. In the Great Hall of the chateau you can admire part of an outstanding collection of vedutas and maps of European countries and cities from the 17th century.
Group capacity: at most 50.

2) Mělník underground tour

The underground system, built gradually in the 13th and 14th centuries in the sandstone and marl of the Mělník hill, is located under the entire historic core of the city. The deepest corridor is located 25 meters below the surface. To see the treasure of the local underground we have to walk a 150 meters long tunnel. It is the widest well in the Czech Republic, which dates back to the 14th century. There are also several legends associated with the area, for example, that St. Wenceslas and thousands of knights are sleeping in the bowels of the Mělník hill, who will come to help when the country is in the worst trouble.
Group capacity: at most 20.

3) Mělník Ossuary and Church

The Mělník Ossuary was built in the church of St. Peter and Paul and is one of the largest in the Czech Republic, along with the ossuary in Kutná Hora. The bones, which are arranged here, are the remains of 10,000-15,000 victims of war events. The Ossuary was formerly an extension of the monastery cemetery and although it is smaller and simpler than the more famous one at Kutná Hora, it's also more intimate, and far fewer people know about. The tour includes The Church of St. Peter and Paul, which is one of the oldest still-functioning churches in Bohemia founded a thousand years ago and is dominated by a church tower, from which you can enjoy a beautiful view of the confluence of the largest Czech rivers – the Vltava and the Elbe – and the royal vineyard.
Group capacity: at most 50.

4) Hořín Lock

A pleasant 5 km long round trip along the tourist trail leads through the Hořín Park to the Hořín lock chambers and back along the navigation canal. The technical monument, which is still functional today, underwent reconstruction in 2019–21, through which even the largest river cruise ships can sail.
Group capacity: at most 50.
