The Mathematics of Jiří Matoušek

Prague is one of the principal european cities with direct air connections to most european cities (Prague airport is called Vaclav Havel Aiport Prague). Prague contains plenty of hotels of all categories, here is a list of suggested options. Here is a list of restaurants nearby the conference site.

Location of the conference

The conference was held in Karolinum, the historical seat of the Charles University in Prague. The entrance is from Celetná 20 street, see the map below. Celetná street is in a pedestrian zone, the closest stops of public transportation are "Můstek" metro/tram station (about 500m) or "Náměstí Republiky" metro/tram station (about 500m).

Information about public transportation in Prague is available at the Prague Public Transit Company site (you can write the names without accents).

All lectures were held in Blue lecture room (Modrá posluchárna) on the 2nd floor.

Directions

Airport – City center

  • Airport Express (AE) bus: price is 60 CZK, paid directly to a driver (5:30 am - 9 pm).

The route is Terminal 1 - Terminal 2 - Náměstí Republiky (yellow metro line B), then it continues to train stations.

  • Airport shuttle runs every 30 minutes (7:30 am - 7 pm), price is 150 CZK.

The terminal stop V Celnici is close to Náměstí Republiky (tram/metro station).

  • Taxi: If you plan to take a taxi to the conference site, note that Celetná street is a pedestrian zone, so the taxi cannot take you directly to the front of the building. The nearest taxi-accesible place is "Dům u Černé matky Boží". Say or write this to the taxi driver (it can be without accents). It is a unique cubism-style house in Prague, at the end of Celetná street. From there it takes about 100m walk to the conference site in the direction to the Staroměstské náměstí (Old town square).

The taxi price from the airport should be about 600 CZK and might increase if you get queued in a traffic jam (about 6 CZK/min of waiting). To avoid troubles we advice to ask the driver to estimate the price before you start the ride. If the driver knows that you are aware of the expected price, you might get a fair ride.

  • Public transportation: from the airport by bus no. 119 to metro A (green line) station Nádraží Veleslavín and then to the city center (e.g. to metro station Můstek).

Main train station – City center & Karolinum

The main train station (Hlavní nádraží) is on a red metro line C, so you can easily use public transportation to get to your hotel. If you plan to go directly to Karolinum, the easiest way is by foot, it is just about 15 minutes from the main train station.

Location of the poster session

The poster session on Thursday afternoon will be held at the building of Faculty of Mathematics and Physics at Malostranské náměstí 25. The building stands next to the St Nicholas Church and the entrance is directly from Malostranské náměstí, see the map below. K stands for Karolinum and P for the poster session. If you want to use public transportation, go to "Staroměstská" or "Můstek" metro station, take line A in the direction "Nemocnice Motol" and exit at "Malostranská". Malostranské náměstí is just one stop further by tram number 12, 20 or 22, or it is about 10 minutes walk.

Accommodation

There are plenty of hotels in the city center of Prague. For convenience, we provide a list of several hotels available within walking distance from Karolinum. The prices are in all cases at most 100 EUR/night, depending on type of the room. Booking can be made by contacting the hotels directly.

For students we have reserved a dormitory-style accomodation. However, the capacity is limited, so contact us/make a reservation soon.
