Dear colleagues,
due to small number of participants on the first seminar
we will assign the non-assigned dates by online voting.
Please, choose the date of your talk here:
http://doodle.com/poll/3pqwq558erbqp2px
It would be really advisable for those of you who did
not talk in Winter semester or last year to reserve
a date.
There are 12 students signed up for the Doctoral seminar
in SIS and we have 13 seminars this semester, so the
premise is that (unless we find some externists) everyone
will have to have a talk.
Best regards,
Honza Musilek
Dear colleagues,
let me invite you to the first doctoral seminar of summer semester on
this Thursday at 9:50 in S6. Vojtěch Kaluža will present a paper:
Jason Cantarella, Tom Needham, Clayton Shonkwiler, Gavin Stewart:
Random Triangles and Polygons in the Plane [1]
Advertisement:
--------------
"Given three distinct points in the plane at random, what is the
probability that they will form an obtuse triangle?"
As stated above, the question is ill-posed since the probability
measure in question is not specified. However, the problem has been
considered several times from different perspectives in the past. I
will present an article that constitutes one possible approach to the
question, arguably the most robust so far. It allows one also to
answer a generalization of the presented question to polygons. The
approach relies on correspondence between plane polygons and the
Grassmannian manifold of planes in R^n.
No prior knowledge will be assumed.
-----
Papers will not be presented on the first seminar. Instead, you can
choose from the list on the seminar webpage [2] or propose a paper on
your own. As usual, when you choose your article, write me an e-mail
so I can update the web schedule.
Also, I will bring a schedule with available dates for the next
talks. First come, first served, so don't be too late if you want to
choose your talk date.
With best regards,
Honza
