Recent technological advances in DNA extraction and sequencing are now allowing the retrieval of genetic information from individuals who lived thousands of years ago. This innovation radically changed the way we use genetics to study history and provided extraordinary insights into the human past. This talk will review recent ancient DNA work on 4,000-year-old individuals from the Near East who belonged to the Canaanite civilization.
The Near East is often described as the cradle of civilization where several Bronze Age cultures developed into complex urban societies introducing many aspects of the human civilization as it is known today. The Canaanites (who were later known as the Phoenicians) emerged in the Near East during the Bronze Age; they created the first alphabet, established colonies throughout the Mediterranean, and were mentioned numerous times in the Bible. But few textual records from the Canaanites themselves have survived and the available contradicting reports kept them to this day enigmatic. Our work provides clear genetic insight into the origin and fate of the Canaanites.
