J. Vohradský Modeling and simulation of lambda-phage genetic network
Bacteriophage lambda is bacterial virus consisting of protein particle and double-stranded DNA. Soon after infection, the lytic or lysogenic growth is chosen. In the lytic pathway, viral DNA is replicated many times causing lysis of the host cell and the release of other viruses that infect new bacteria. In some cases, the lytic cycle is aborted, and the phage switches to the lysogenic pathway, in which the phage genome is integrated into the bacterial host DNA and is replicated and transmitted as any other chromosomal DNA. All molecules associated with the lambda phage genetic circuit are known together with their interactions, forming thus ideal model for modeling and simulation of its kinetic behavior. In the talk I will present a computational model of the lambda genetic network and show in the simulation consequences of the changes in concentration of critical genes for choice between lytic and lysogenic pathways. The model serves as an example of how the computational simulation can lead to conclusions about functioning of biological systems.
