Arrival during the day...
6-9 pm Bernard Welcome Party
On campus.
Bernard
is one of the best Czech brands of beer.
In fact, recently at beer festival Pivex, Bernard was voted the best Czech
beer. The brewery is sponsoring the welcome party by donating the so called
"liquid bread", i.e., the beer. Typical Czech food is served during the evening.
Soft drinks available.
Tuesday July 7, 1998
8:55 am Opening Ceremony
2:00 pm Bus tour through Prague for accompanying persons, buses leave
from the campus. The tour will include the Prague Castle with the
St. Vitus Vathedral, the Strahov monastery with its splendid old Library, the
former Jewish Town with the legendary Old Cemetery and the oldest Synagogue
now in existence in Europe, and the Vysehrad with the National Cemetery of
the great Czech artists and intellectuals of the past. A bit of walking cannot
be avoided, but not more than about a mile will be covered in all, mostly downhill.
Wednesday July 8, 1998
2:00 pm Guided walking tour through Prague for accompanying persons,
starts at Dejvicka subway stop. From
there the Metro ride goes to Mustek, and after a look at Wenceslas Square,
the political center of the city, we see the splendid Old Town Square with the
famous astronomical clock from the 15th century, cross gothic Charles Bridge,
explore the unique gardens of Lesser Town (the Vrtba, the Ledebour, and the
Wallenstein gardens), and visit the overwhelming baroque St. Nicholas Church.
The tour would end at Malostranska Metro station.
Both tours will be led by professional guide Petr Liebl, who is
fluent in English, German, and Russian, and will be helpful both in
adapting both tours to the needs and wishes of the guests, and in advising
on other interesting sights in Prague and cultural occasions in general.
Thursday July 9, 1998
3:00 pm Special Boruvka's and Jarnik's Lectures in the historical building of the
Charles University - Carolinum. Coffee
and refreshments available before the lectures. Special buses will be available
to transport participants from Suchdol to Downtown. If you go on your own,
use the entrance from Celetna street. Recommended route is via the Old Town
Square.
5:00 pm Guided tour through the historical building of the
Charles University - Carolinum. A unique occassion to visit rooms which are
otherwise inaccessible for tourists. Concluded with a conference photo.
6:00 pm Conference Concert in the historical building of the
Charles University - Carolinum. The concert is given by L. Brabec, an excellent
Czech guitarist. The only musician who has already performed in all continents,
including Antarctica!
7:30 pm Conference Banquet at Zofin Island. (See the map how to get there from Carolinum.) Refreshments,
music. Buses will be arranged to transport participants back to Suchdol.
