Abstract

Problems from many disciplines can be formulated in terms of the geometry of convex bodies, and often this formulation is the key to solving a problem. The present lecture will focus on six problems that were not primarily geometric in origin but have been intensively studied in terms of an intuitively appealing geometric formulation. However, in these cases the problems are still UNSOLVED despite the geometric formulation. The problems come from such areas as linear programming, information theory, mathematical economics, and approximation theory. In each case there will be an explanation of why the problem is of interest, how the geometric formulation arises, and what is known about the problem.
