Applied optimization in Smart Grids
A smart grid is a modernized electrical grid that uses ITC to improve the efficiency, reliability, economics, and sustainability of the production and distribution of electricity. A case study of smart grids is a unique residential area in town Meppel, the Netherlands. Houses in this district are heated by a hybrid system with heat and electricity from a biogas CHP. In my talk, I will present a mathematical model and algorithms developed to control the heating system.
Our model is based on a simple heat pump converting electricity into heat which is stored in a buffer for domestic demands. In the first case, electricity needed to run the heat pump has to be bought on a day-ahead market, so we are interested in a planning which minimizes the cost. In the second case, a group of heat pumps in the district is powered from the central hybrid system. As this has to be dimensioned for the maximal consumption, it is important to minimize
