ESA'99

The 7th Annual European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA'99) will be held in Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic. With respect to the positive experience from previous meetings (and other similar meetings like SODA), ESA'99 will keep and enhance the format of previous meetings.

ESA'99 & ICALP'99

As an innovation, ESA'99 will be organized tail to head with the ICALP'99 -- the 26-th International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming. The participation in both meetings is encouraged by the fact that, in contrast to the previous meetings, ICALP'99 starts already on Sunday, July 11 and lasts till Thursday, July 15, 1999. This leaves room for  ESA'99 to  start on Friday, July 16 and to finish on Sunday, July 18, 1999. ESA'99 and ICALP'99 take place in the same hotel in a residential area of Prague. Each conference has its own program commitee and its own local organizing committee. A special discount for participants in both meetings will be provided.

Call for Papers

You can have a look at the full text of the Call for Papers in HTML and in a postscript file . Here is an open letter (ps file) composed by Peter Winkler as an explanation what SODA is and why to submit. We view ESA as kind of European SODA and think that this text may be relevant even in European context.

Submissions

Authors are invited to submit an extended abstract or full draft paper of at most 10 pages, including e-mail address, to arrive by January 17, 1999. For hard copy submissions mail 22 copies to

Alternatively (and preferably), a standard postscript version of the manuscript may be sent to esa99pro@kam.ms.mff.cuni.cz. The e-mail message should have following format:
Author:   ...name of the author.....
Title:    ...the title of the paper.....
Abstract: ...short abstract...
%!PS      ...the Postscipt file of the manuscript...
Notification of acceptance will follow by March 28, 1999 via e-mail. Accepted papers will be published in the proceedings of the Symposium, which will appear in the series Lecture Notes in Computer Science of Springer-Verlag. The camera-ready copy is due before April 25, 1999. All participants will receive a copy of the proceedings.

ESA'99 Location

ESA'99 will take place in Prague in the Czech Republic on July 16-18, 1999. Prague is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Its magical atmosphere has been shaped over ten centuries. Places of the greatest tourist interest are on the Royal Route running from the Powder Tower through Celetna Street to the Old Town Square, then across the Charles Bridge through the Lesser Town up to the Hradcany Castle. One should not miss the Jewish Town, the National Gallery with its fine collection of Czech gothic art, collection of old European art, and a beautiful collection of French art. Prague has a population of roughly 1.3 million.

ESA'99 will take place at the PRAHA Hotel***** (Susicka 20, Prague 6), which is located in the residential area of green gardens in suburban district Hanspaulka in Prague 6. The hotel is situated in the middle of an eight hectares park (i.e. nearly twenty acres). The hotel complex offers spacious interior and exterior areas dominated by terraced layout of the hotel itself, overlooking the marvelous Prague castle. The five-star PRAHA Hotel is a luxury residential hotel built in the 1980's for official governmental VIP guests. The Prague International Airport is within 15-20 minutes reached by a car. To get into the very heart of the city, you can take hotel's shuttle mini-bus. After your scientific program you can enjoy the opportunities for active relaxation: indoor swimming pool, sauna, massage room, tennis and volleyball courts. A garage with service is at guests' disposal.

Conference Facilities: Conference Hall (in the style of a cinema hall). There are other rooms suitable for all types of smaller separated meetings. The hotel is well equipped with audiovisual technology and projection facilities for all media as well as with Internet access, which will be available to the participants of the conference. The PRAHA Hotel will be reserved only for ESA participants.

Accommodation in the hotel KRYSTAL: The hotel PRAHA offering special prices for conference participants is recommended by the organizers. Another option, meant mainly for students, is a modest accommodation in the hotel KRYSTAL. The participants thinking about this option are warned that the distance from the hotel KRYSTAL to the hotel PRAHA is ca. 30 minutes (by tram and walk).

Social Program

We prepared a rich social program for the late afternoon and evening on July 17. We are happy to offer you a visit to the most beautiful parts of the historical Prague and to spend lovely evenings there.

First we will attend St. Nicholas Church, one of the most important historical monuments in Prague. It's picture is tightly connected with the panorama of Prague Castle and Charles Bridge.

The church is regarded as the most outstanding building of baroque Prague. It stands adjacent to the 17th century Jesuit College (today the seat of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University) on the site of a 13th century parish church. The magnificent St. Nicholas Church was built in 1704-1756 by Christoph and K.I. Dientzenhofer, father and son, for the Jesuits. A. Lurago finished the mighty tower and designed interior decorations. The church frescos are the work of J.I. Kracker and are among the largest in Europe, approx. 1500 square meters in size. For the participants of ESA the concert for trumpets and organ is prepared in the church. It will be performed by famous solists J. Pokorna (organ) and V. Kozderka (trumpet).

Nearby St. Nicholas Church and Lesser Town Square one can find many important historical monuments. We want to mention two of the palaces - palaces of Ledeburg (adaptation of originally 16th century renaissance houses by G. Santini and I.J. Palardi) and palaces of Palffyi (built in 1713). Behind the palaces lies charming terraced garden with a salla terrena. The garden goes up to Prague Castle. The evening illumination provides unforgettable romantic atmosphere of Prague.

The short performance by Mr. Noriyuki Sawa will be offered. Mr. Sawa is a Japanese puppeteer now living in Prague. In his work the Japanese traditional art is successfully combined with the European one. He is known internationally and appreciated for his creative ideas.

After the performance the reception follows. The garden as well as all the rooms will be open and accessible to the ESA participants.

Excursion to the National Art Gallery (Thursday 15)
We will meet at the registration desk in the hotel Praha. You can visit the beautiful exposition of art with the unexpected and special guide. Comments in English.

Welcome party (Friday 16)
The welcome party will be held in the hotel Praha.
Additional ticket: DM 50.00 (26 EUR)

Cultural event and the reception (Saturday 17)
The evening will be devoted to the cultural program offering both the music and short theater performance. A reception in the historical part of Prague will follow.
